The Contest
As the videographer, my choice to capture this scene with stark lighting and heavy shadows reflects the tension between individuality and oppression.
The use of low-key lighting accentuates the coldness of the environment, with deep blacks enveloping the space, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere. By keeping Joy and her artwork illuminated in contrast, I’m visually underscoring the theme of resistance in a world that suppresses creativity
In the year 2100, JOY, 27, an artist, presents her best artwork in front of the Jury at the Annual Worldwide Art Contest,
but the evaluation process doesn't go the way she expected.
The dim, shadow-heavy lighting creates an oppressive, controlled environment, while her colorful painting becomes a beacon of defiance within that space. The shadows of the figures—likely members of the Jury—loom large, symbolizing the authority and conformity that overshadow creativity in this future society.
The project required crafting a lighting scheme that mimicked the submerged and mystical qualities of underwater scenes using blue and green light filters to achieve an aquatic hue.
We incorporated moving lights with wave-like effects and utilized a haze machine to soften and diffuse the light, emulating the ocean’s natural luminescence.
